CHAPTER 21

Danny and Skip Farrell had spent time on Martha’s Vineyard since they were infants. Their father, a second generation Beacon Hill Bostonian, had inherited wealth from his father and used a fair-sized chunk to build a sprawling resort home for his family on choice beachfront property north of Edgartown. The boys were fraternal twins who spent their first eighteen summers partaking of the activities that go with a privileged life. Longtime members of the Edgartown Yacht Club, they were masterful sailors capable of maneuvering any surface craft with a canvas sheet attached to a mast.

Whenever they left their real estate business in Beantown and assumed their role as full-time players on the Vineyard, it was a cat and mouse game of seduction. And so, after wining and dining Ronnie and Vicki twice, along with a day-long cruise aboard their forty-foot sloop named Pure Joy, the thirty-something playboys were ready to cash in. Danny called Vicki on Friday morning at the Crow’s Nest and having no reason to beat around the bush about their intentions made his never-miss offer.

“Since it’s your last night on the Vineyard we’re planning to give you a night to remember. I picked up four two-pound lobsters, salad, fresh corn on the cob, and key lime pie. After a walk on the beach, we can soak in our hot tub on the deck facing the ocean. You can have all the Absolut vodka and cranberry juice you can handle or if you prefer, we’ve got some high-powered medicinal pot. We’ll pick you guys up at seven. So far, it’s been a lot of fun. My brother and I have really enjoyed your company. But tonight is going to be different. I think you know what I mean. So leave your inhibitions behind and your swimsuits too. You two won’t be disappointed, I promise.”

It had been a memorable vacation, especially the cruise to Nantucket. Vicki was a veteran of playing the game with men like the Farrell brothers, but she didn’t want to jeopardize her new found friendship. Unwittingly caught off guard, she’d already given Danny the go ahead. After avoiding the issue with Ronnie the entire afternoon at the beach, Vicki finally decided she’d have to come clean. The only problem was timing. So at six, dressed in a sleek sporty outfit, she knocked on Ronnie’s door.

“Hey Ronnie I need to talk with you.”

A moment later, Ronnie stood there in a white cotton bathrobe and flip-flops.

“Wow, don’t you look smashing. I’ll be ready shortly. What time is it?”

Vicki glanced at her watch. It was time to drop Danny’s invitation.

“Ronnie, please stop what you’re doing. We gotta talk.”

“Can’t we talk while I’m getting dressed? You’re wearing all black tonight?”

“Ronnie. Please stop moving around and sit on the bed,” Vicky pressed.

Ronnie ignored her request, and took a pair of white slacks and a matching white cotton top out of a dresser drawer and put them on over a white thong and lace bra. She was entering the bathroom when Vicki, in desperation, came over and grabbed her by the arm.
